Jammu and Kashmir education infrastructure expansion

In July 2026 the Union Territory reported a surge in participation in the central government's Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) programme, with 396 schools enrolling over 90,000 students and offering smart classrooms, ICT labs and vocational training under the National Education Policy. At the same time, Jammu and Kashmir continued to receive some of the lowest pension top‑ups under the National Social Assistance Programme, with monthly payments unchanged since 2012.

A week later the Ministry of Education disclosed further investments: 3,480 new dormitory beds were built across Navodaya Vidyalayas in the region between 2023‑24 and 2025‑26, representing roughly 14 % of national dormitory construction in that period. The response also confirmed that 427 schools in Jammu and Kashmir and 41 in Ladakh had been selected under the PM SHRI scheme, detailing teacher appointments that included dozens of Sanskrit, Urdu and regional‑language instructors. These steps illustrate an ongoing push to expand educational facilities and staff in Jammu and Kashmir while social assistance remains limited.
