Japan 2026 bankruptcy surge
Entities: Tokyo Shoko Research · Fukui Prefecture · Imperial Data Bank · Japanese small and medium‑sized enterprises · Lehman Shock
Overview
In the first half of 2026 Japan experienced a sharp increase in corporate insolvencies. Niigata Prefecture recorded a record 78 bankruptcies, driven mainly by sales slumps and “recession‑type” failures, with services, construction and manufacturing most affected. The surge included firms linked to the COVID‑19 pandemic and rising inflation, and highlighted a rise in employee‑resignation bankruptcies that erode company resilience.
Nationwide, small and medium‑sized enterprises filed bankruptcies at a rate surpassing the post‑Lehman peak of 2008. Data show more than 5,300 filings across the country, with the majority involving firms of fewer than five employees and debts under ¥100 million. Manufacturing and construction remain the leading sectors, while tight labour markets, lingering loan‑policy effects, and higher input costs continue to strain small operators.
