Japan defense strategy nuclear submarine consideration

Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has stated that the government is not ruling out the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines. This consideration is part of an effort to revise three key national security documents—the National Security Strategy, the National Defense Strategy, and the Defense Buildup Program—by the end of the year to address regional security challenges.

Koizumi noted that nuclear-powered submarines offer strategic advantages, such as higher speeds and the ability to remain submerged for extended periods, which could enhance crew safety. However, he also identified significant challenges, including higher costs, the requirement for larger hulls, the need for specialized technical expertise, and the fact that they are generally less quiet underwater than conventional diesel-electric vessels.

The potential move follows positive assessments from U.S. Navy officials regarding Japan’s existing nuclear energy technology expertise. The push for enhanced capabilities has gained momentum within the ruling coalition in response to security concerns involving China and North Korea.
