Japan Fukushima revitalization and education reforms

In 2024 the Fukushima Innovation‑Coast Promotion Organization launched a “Reconstruction Knowledge” programme, bringing together the 24 universities later chosen to work on radiation, agriculture, robotics, drones and energy research. A kickoff meeting in August 2024 included a report session, poster exhibition and student workshop. Around the same time, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) ran a health‑education training session in Tokyo for teachers, aiming to boost health‑literacy curricula in primary and secondary schools.

Building on those early activities, the organization announced on 23 July 2026 that the 24 university projects had been formally selected for a five‑year (2026‑2030) period, receiving 400 million yen in subsidies to support reconstruction knowledge and regional revitalisation across fifteen Hamadori municipalities, such as Iwaki, Soma and Minamisoma. Concurrently, MEXT opened a new public call for the 2025‑2026 “Industrial Innovation Human‑Resource Development” high‑school reform programme, allocating up to 62 billion yen to establish reform‑leading bases in public and special‑needs high schools, continuing the push toward the nation’s 2040 high‑school vision.
