Japan initiatives for women in agriculture

In alignment with the United Nations’ ‘International Year of Women in Agriculture’ in 2026, Japan has launched several initiatives to address gender gaps and support female workers in the agricultural and livestock sectors.

In mid-October, a symposium titled ‘Gender Equality from the Region 2026’ was held in Tokyo. Supported by the Cabinet Office’s Gender Equality Bureau and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the event featured experts and farmers discussing traditional customs and gender disparities within the industry.

Following this, regional efforts have shifted toward practical empowerment and networking. In Niigata City, a fashion show was held to promote functional, stylish agricultural workwear designed to make daily labor more enjoyable for women. Additionally, the ‘Women in Agriculture and Livestock Future Festival 2026’ is scheduled for late November in Osaka. This festival aims to foster support networks through skill-sharing workshops and discussions regarding the career challenges faced by women working in isolation.
