Japan national football team Kirin Cup preparations

Preparations for the 2026 Kirin Cup involve intensive tactical analysis and coaching efforts by the Japan national football team. Coaches Shunsuke Nakamura and Toshihide Saito have highlighted the significant behind-the-scenes work, including detailed video analysis and technical preparation, required to communicate strategies to players.

Following a Round of 32 finish at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, manager Hajime Moriyasu will lead the squad under a short-term contract through the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. The Japan Football Association has announced the squad for the upcoming Kirin Challenge Cup and Kirin Cup Soccer 2026, featuring established players such as Takefusa Kubo, Ritsu Doan, and Daizen Maeda, alongside new call-ups including Kosei Matsuki, Kaina Tanimura, Hayato Nakano, and Shunsuke Saito.

Moriyasu specifically noted that Tanimura was selected due to his high scoring rate in J1, stating he wanted to see the player who is “currently producing the most results.” The manager also addressed squad composition, noting that several players participating in the U-21 Asian Championship were considered but could not be called up due to tournament scheduling conflicts.

The team is scheduled to play four matches between September 24 and October 5 against Uruguay, Venezuela, Ecuador, and either New Zealand or Panama.
