Japan regional and inbound tourism development
Overview
Japan is implementing various strategic initiatives to bolster regional tourism and manage the increasing influx of international travelers. Efforts include marketing campaigns such as the Japan National Tourism Organization’s use of influencers to promote regional landmarks like Hakodate to Southeast Asian audiences. Additionally, the Fiji Tourism Board has strengthened its presence in the Japanese market by partnering with local travel and educational agencies to capitalize on a 20% increase in Japanese visitors to Fiji.
To support regional revitalization, new digital and professional infrastructure is being developed. JALPAK has launched ‘Activities JALPAK’, an online reservation platform for unique local experiences. Meanwhile, Hyogo Prefecture has introduced training programs to develop high-value inbound guides following a significant increase in foreign overnight stays.
Promotion of inbound tourism is expanding through large-scale trade events. The Japan National Tourism Organization is hosting the ‘VISIT JAPAN Travel & MICE Mart 2026’ from September 24 to 26, in conjunction with Tourism EXPO Japan 2026. The event features approximately 280 overseas buyers and 350 domestic sellers to facilitate business sessions focused on the Kanto area and nature-based lifestyles. Furthermore, the seventh Japan Rail Fair is scheduled to return to Singapore from October 15 to 17, 2026, under the theme ‘Journey into Culture’ to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations.
Strategic shifts toward international standards are also underway. The World Travel & Tourism Council, the Japan Association of Travel Agents, and Tourism EXPO Japan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen Japan’s global industry position. This follows a 2025 economic contribution from the sector of US$343.1 billion, or 8.1% of the national GDP. Additionally, Japan Airlines is expanding partnerships with certification bodies like the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and Vireo Srl to help domestic operators and destinations meet international sustainability standards.
