Japan summer cooling foods
Overview
In early July, Japanese food producers responded to an unusually long, hot summer by creating a wide range of freeze‑by‑design products. Premium confectioners, snack makers, pharmaceutical firms, beverage companies and seasoning manufacturers launched frozen desserts, ice‑slurry drinks, chilled sauces and other cold‑served items designed to stay icy or semi‑frozen, extending sales into the autumn heat.
By late July the trend broadened to include additional “cool” foods and crossed into neighbouring Taiwan. In Japan, brands such as Muji, Nissui, Asahi and Meiji introduced mint‑flavored ice cream, icy cold noodles that remain chilled after heating, chilled spicy beer and cold vegetable soup. Taiwanese operator Doufu Catering Group rolled out Korean‑style cold‑noodle sets with ice‑crushed broth and fresh toppings, marketing them as quick relief from temperatures above 30 °C.
Later in July, individual eateries also joined the cooling‑food push. A night‑time bar in Matsuyama opened a daytime shaved‑ice kiosk using glacier ice, a sweet‑potato shop in Mie launched sweet‑potato ice cream made with caramelised tubers and Niigata’s Gandhi‑milk, a wagashi house in Aichi began serving a strawberry‑fig yogurt drink, and a café in Kyoto introduced a sweet‑potato‑cream shaved‑ice topped with mochi and red bean. These limited‑time desserts were marketed to draw visitors during the ongoing heatwave.
Together, these developments illustrate a regional shift toward food and beverage products explicitly marketed for body‑temperature relief during persistent summer heat, expanding both product categories and geographic reach.
