Japan’s 2026 summer season, which began in late May with food fairs in Nagaoka and Fukuoka, continued through August with a diverse array of regional festivals, food expos, and fireworks displays. In early August, Tobu Department Stores hosted themed exhibitions: the “Summer National Gourmet Festival” in Utsunomiya featured regional bakeries, while the “Okinawa Expo” in Ikebukuro showcased Okinawan cuisine. Chiba’s Rosemary Park hosted the “Summer! Hanamaru Gathering!!” featuring agricultural activities. Mid-August events included the 7th Kamagaya Fireworks in Chiba on August 11 and the “Yume no Saiten in Shiokaze” in Nikaho City, Akita Prefecture, which featured approximately 30 food stalls. Musical events also expanded, with Hyogo Prefecture hosting various performances at Itami Aiphonic Hall and Gunma Prefecture hosting the 46th Kusatsu Summer International Music Academy & Festival from August 17 to 31. Late August saw significant activity in Tottori with the 19th Hokuei Sand Dune Festival on August 23. In Fuji City, the 14th Rakuza Fireworks Festival was scheduled for August 22, featuring a 500-shell display and double dutch performances. Gunma Prefecture hosted the 52nd Takasaki Matsuri on August 22–23, which included a large fireworks display with viewing areas for approximately 53,000 people. Tokyo’s final week of August featured major cultural events: the Asakusa Samba Carnival on August 29, the Kōenji Awa Odori Festival on August 29–30—which expected up to 1 million spectators—and the Harajuku Omotesando Super Yosakoi dance festival. In Hokkaido, Tomakomai hosted community events including the Tarumae Sun Festival, an ocarina and guitar concert, and the Shiraoi Poroto Mintara Festival, which offered Ainu cultural experiences. ~~Other seasonal activities included~~ As the ~~‘Tanushimaru Tomogimogi Stamp Rally’~~ season transitions, late August events include the “Summer Vacation Last Summer Festival Vol. 3” in ~~Fukuoka Prefecture~~ Ichinomiya on August 30 and ~~preparations for~~ the ~~‘Autumn Burger Fest 2026’~~ “Shinmon-dori Summer Festival 2026” in ~~Saitama Prefecture scheduled for September.~~ Izumo on August 29–30.
