Japan summer festivals keep expanding with local fairs

Overview

July 2026 saw Japan’s summer festival season broaden further. In addition to the city‑level events documented earlier, major restaurant chains introduced seasonal food festivals. Skylark’s Jonathan brand launched two rolling fairs— a spice‑focused “Red Curry” event and a peach‑themed “momo wow!” dessert fair—at all Jonathan locations from 16 July through early September. Menus featured hot shrimp red curry, cold tofu‑based curry udon made with Akita’s Inaniwa noodles, and a variety of peach desserts. Meanwhile, the Joinus shopping complex in Yokohama, operated by JOI, opened a “Summer Gourmet Festival” from 13 July to 31 August, offering limited‑time summer dishes across its 33 restaurants and cafés, including cold noodles, spicy tom yum noodles, fruit‑laden sweets, grilled eel, and fried fish. These promotions aim to draw shoppers and diners during the hot season, complementing the numerous local fairs, street markets, and community programs that have been proliferating across Japan throughout July and August.
