Japan vegetable price increases
Overview
Leafy vegetable prices in Japan have experienced significant surges driven by unfavorable weather conditions. In late September, extreme heat followed by prolonged rainfall and low sunlight in key production areas caused retail prices for items like lettuce to more than double. At the Tokyo Central Wholesale Market, lettuce wholesale prices reached approximately 431 yen per kilogram, exceeding last year’s prices by more than 2.5 times.
The shortage has impacted the food service industry, forcing restaurants to substitute specific varieties with standard alternatives due to procurement difficulties and rising costs. By early October, continued nationwide rainfall and an autumn rain front led to underdeveloped crops in regions such as Shizuoka. While prices for leafy greens like mizuna, lettuce, and cabbage remain elevated, root vegetables such as carrots, onions, and potatoes have remained stable due to strong harvests.
