Japanese academic assessment performance
Overview
Japan has demonstrated high academic performance in recent assessments. According to the 2025 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, Japan ranked first among 38 OECD member nations in reading, mathematics, and science, marking the first time it has held the top position in all three subjects simultaneously.
Following these international results, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology released the 2026 National Assessment of Academic Ability for elementary and junior high students. While regional disparities in scores were not significant, the national report identified a correlation between socioeconomic status and academic performance. The findings also noted that certain prefectures, including Tokyo, Ishikawa, and Fukui, maintained high rankings and showed higher levels of student confidence in using ICT tools.
