Japanese automotive production disruptions

A magnitude-7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture initially disrupted the Japanese automotive industry, causing fatalities and damaging infrastructure. Major manufacturers including Toyota, Nissan, Daihatsu, Mitsubishi, and Honda were forced to suspend operations at various plants in Kyushu and Honshu. The tremor specifically impacted supply chains, affecting component makers like Aisin Corp. and semiconductor producers such as Renesas Electronics and Sony.

Recovery efforts were subsequently hampered by Typhoon Dolphin, which forced Toyota to halt production across nine assembly plants and 17 production lines, affecting models such as the Corolla, Camry, and Lexus series. The typhoon compounded existing delays from the earthquake, which had already prevented the production of approximately 20,000 vehicles. Additionally, Honda faced ongoing closures due to a shortage of shock absorbers caused by earthquake damage to supplier Astemo facilities, while Toyota's recovery remained hindered by damage at an Aisin facility.
