Japanese convenience store onigiri market shifts
Overview
Major Japanese convenience store chains have begun adjusting their rice ball (onigiri) offerings in response to changing market conditions.
In late August, Lawson and Seven-Eleven Japan announced price reductions for various onigiri products, a shift following several years of price increases driven by logistics and procurement costs. These cuts, ranging from approximately 10 to 19 yen, are attributed to improved rice inventories and declining retail rice prices in Japan. Other retailers, including FamilyMart and Kura Sushi, also indicated price reductions.
Following these price adjustments, Seven-Eleven Japan announced the September 8 launch of ‘Okii na Omusubi’, a new series of large-sized rice balls containing roughly 1.6 times the rice of standard versions. The company scheduled a promotional sale from September 9 to September 13 to mark the introduction of these new products.
