Japanese Prime Minister Yasukuni Shrine offerings

Overview

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has engaged in ritual offerings to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo during its autumn festival. On October 16, Takaichi sent a ‘Masakaki’ offering in her official capacity. While she intended to refrain from a personal visit to avoid diplomatic friction, the action drew condemnation from South Korea and China. South Korea expressed ‘deep disappointment and regret,’ while the Chinese Embassy described the shrine as a symbol of militarism.

On October 19, Takaichi provided a private donation of ‘Tamagushiryo’ to the shrine, delivered via the General Council Chair of the Liberal Democratic Party. To manage regional sensitivities, the Prime Minister continued to refrain from a formal visit during the festival period, though other government and party officials visited the site.

Among those visiting the shrine were Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ibayashi Tatsunori and LDP Election Strategy Committee Chair Nishimura Yasutoshi. In response to these actions, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs lodged a serious protest. Spokesperson Mao Ning asserted that the shrine serves as a symbol of Japanese militarism and urged Japan to face its history and repent for past crimes to gain the trust of its neighbors.
