Japanese swimmer Tomo Akari Honda sentenced for dangerous driving case

Olympic silver medalist swimmer Tomo Honda was indicted on charges of dangerous driving causing injury following a traffic accident. The Japan Swimming Federation announced that Akari Honda would withdraw from the Pan Pacific Championships and the 2026 Asian Games. The federation issued an apology, stating, “We deeply apologize to the victim and all concerned parties,” and committed has been sentenced to strengthening compliance education. During her first court hearing at one year of imprisonment, suspended for three years, by the Tokyo District Court Tachikawa Branch, Honda admitted to the charges. The sentencing follows an incident took place in November of the previous year 2025 in Tama City, Tokyo, where she Honda drove a passenger vehicle at speeds between 88 and 108 km/h in a 30 km/h zone. The resulting collision vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with another vehicle caused car, causing injuries to a man in his 60s, requiring roughly 60s that required approximately one month of recovery. Prosecutors noted that Honda increased her speed because she “did not want to lose distance from a sports car driving ahead.” During her initial court hearing, Honda admitted to the charges. She had previously stated she believed the matter could be resolved privately because it occurred during her personal time, admitting to a lack of awareness regarding the severity of the situation. Following the incident, the Japan Swimming Federation announced her withdrawal from the Pan Pacific Championships and the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya. The federation issued an apology, stating, “We deeply apologize to the victim and all concerned parties,” and committed to strengthening compliance education.
