Japan's quantum computing push

In late July 2026 Japan’s quantum‑computing agenda moved from strategic assessment to concrete hardware programmes. On 21 July, SoftBank and quantum‑computing firm Quantinuum issued a white paper outlining two industrial use cases—quantum chemistry for materials and energy research, and large‑scale graph analysis for telecom fraud detection—while stressing the need to align algorithmic advances with hardware maturity. The paper positioned quantum computing alongside AI and high‑performance computing as a future data‑center service.

A week later, on 27 July, Hitachi announced a partnership with Intel and Japan’s AIST institute, funded by NEDO, to develop silicon‑based qubit chips, pursue 3D packaging, and deliver a 100‑qubit prototype by fiscal 2028, followed by a 1,000‑qubit error‑corrected system by 2030. In parallel, NEDO backed the Okinawa‑based startup Qubitcore to create micro‑optical resonator technology linking ion‑trap processors via photonics, aiming for scalable interconnects between 2026 and 2028. Together, the white‑paper insight and the hardware initiatives reflect a coordinated national effort to transition quantum computing from laboratory research to industrial‑scale deployment.
