JEOFEST '26 science festival in Bornova
Overview
The Bornova Municipality hosted JEOFEST '26, a large-scale science festival focused on the relationship between humans and stones, held from October 23 to October 30, 2026. The event was organized in collaboration with the TMMOB Chamber of Geological Engineers Izmir Branch.
The festival opened with a lecture by earth scientist Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör at the Nevzat Kavalar Cultural Center. During his participation, Şengör visited the Smart City and Innovation Center to review digital twin technology and expressed support for the Abide-i Hürriyet Square project. In his lecture, titled ‘The Story of Stone is Our Story,’ Şengör noted that ‘Human civilization can only exist as long as geology allows it,’ while emphasizing the importance of teaching children about nature.
The program featured diverse scientific sessions and conferences on topics such as Göbeklitepe, the history of Harran, earthquake realities, Antarctic scientific expeditions, and Anatolian volcanoes. The final day included discussions on Anatolian paleontology and renewable energy resources, involving academics, industry representatives, and science enthusiasts.
Additional activities included a ‘Stone and Human’ exhibition at the Uğur Mumcu Culture and Art Center featuring fossils, gemology, maps, and photography. Educational workshops for children, such as mineral hunting and volcano experiments, were also provided alongside a concert by Yaygara.
