Following his high-speed crash at the Catalan Grand Prix in May 2026, Johann Zarco has continued his rehabilitation for multiple left-leg injuries, including torn ACL and PCL, meniscus damage, a fibular tear, and a deep burn. While initial medical advice considered surgery, Zarco opted for a non-surgical, conservative treatment plan after infection risks from skin burns subsided. In early August, Zarco completed his first on-track test in nearly three months, riding a street-legal Honda RC213V at the Circuit Andorra – Pas de la Casa. To further manage his recovery, Zarco has also been using a supermoto at the Pas de la Casa circuit, noting that the machine allows for a “more comfortable riding position.” Zarco’s recovery progressed faster than initially expected, leading him to target a return at the Aragon Grand Prix, scheduled for August 28–30, 2026. His return was contingent upon passing a mandatory medical examination by MotoGP medical director Dr. Angel Charte. On August 28, Zarco successfully returned to competition 103 days after his injury. After being cleared by the medical team to compete for the full weekend, he demonstrated strong form by qualifying directly for Q2 in 10th place, marking him as the fastest Honda rider in the session. During his absence, Cal Crutchlow served as a replacement rider for the last six rounds and remained on standby at Aragon as a backup. Following the event, Zarco confirmed a successful comeback, securing points in both races for LCR Honda. He reported experiencing no significant pain and, despite some minor cramping, noted that he did not experience the swelling he had feared. Zarco mentioned that while he must remain cautious due to his recovering knee, he was able to maintain a strong pace, even setting his fastest lap toward the end of the main race.
