Joint Expeditionary Force northern security activities

Overview

The Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) conducted Exercise Lion Protector 26, a major military drill spanning the North Atlantic, the High North, and the Baltic Sea. The exercises involved amphibious landings, maritime blockades, and the protection of critical infrastructure like undersea cables and energy facilities. Notably, Royal Marines trained on the Faroe Islands with Danish troops for the first time since World War II.

Following the exercises, JEF defense ministers met at Keflavík Air Base in Iceland to discuss security and hybrid threats. A key development was the JEF-Ukraine Enhanced Partnership, which saw Ukrainian mine countermeasure vessels participate in the Lion Protector exercise for the first time. This collaboration aims to integrate Ukrainian operational experience into JEF planning. Ministers also reaffirmed the strategic importance of the Arctic, the Baltic Sea, and the North Atlantic in strengthening NATO’s northern flank and discussed deepening cooperation with Canada.
