The João Pessoa municipal government continued its broad agenda of social, housing, infrastructure, health, and cultural programmes through August 2026. In housing, the administration expanded efforts to address the local deficit. On 7 August, Mayor Leo Bezerra conducted a lottery for 240 apartments in the Residencial Rio Jaguaribe development. Semhab announced an investment exceeding R$ 520 million to deliver 2,657 new housing units across 14 developments, utilizing both municipal funds and the federal ‘Minha Casa, Minha Vida’ program. This strategy includes the ‘Cuidar do Lar’ program for home recovery and land regularization. On 23 August, the city announced the expansion of its housing program through the construction of 400 new homes in the Gramame neighborhood, specifically the Residenciais Jardins dos Coqueiros I and II. This R$ 68 million project, approved by the Ministry of Cities, is expected to begin construction between late 2026 and early 2027. On 31 August, the housing agenda focused on risk mitigation as 14 families from the São José neighborhood signed contracts to acquire new homes through the ‘Compra Assistida’ program. This initiative, held in partnership with Caixa, aims to relocate families living in high-risk areas along the Jaguaribe River prone to flooding. Of the 250 families identified, over 60% have already benefited from the scheme, which allows participants to select preferred neighborhoods while Semhab verifies property legality. Urban infrastructure and public participation remained central. Mayor Bezerra concluded the 2026 ‘Você Prefeito’ cycle, reporting R$ 485 million in infrastructure investments. ~~New paving works were authorized for 35 streets in Alto do Mateus, an R$ 8.9 million project aiming for 100% paving in the neighborhood. Regarding security, the Smart City project completed its first year, having installed 2,521 cameras for real-time monitoring.
