Jori Lehterä retirement from HIFK

Overview

Veteran center Jori Lehterä announced his retirement from professional hockey, departing the HIFK team after playing only four games this season. Lehterä stated he decided to step away because he needs a ‘break,’ though he noted his mind could change in the future.

Following this unexpected departure, HIFK has begun searching for a replacement center. Sports director Janne Laukkanen confirmed the club was caught by surprise and is currently mapping out options. The search faces challenges because European league seasons are already underway, and top-tier talent is being prioritized by leagues in Switzerland, Sweden, and Germany. HIFK is considering looking toward North American players, specifically monitoring NHL training camps, while also accounting for potential work permit processing delays.
