Joshua Dürksen, a Paraguayan racing driver, achieved a milestone by becoming the first Paraguayan to drive a modern Formula 1 car. Serving as a Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 development driver, the 22-year-old completed a two-day testing program at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal using the Mercedes W16 E Performance. During the session, Dürksen covered 875 kilometers over 187 laps. Mercedes Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord commended his maturity and professionalism. Dürksen, who has German roots and is fluent in German, noted his transition from racing under the German flag to representing Paraguay as domestic sponsorship grew. He expressed a desire to act as a bridge between both cultures while pursuing a Formula 1 career. Following his testing, Dürksen signed with Hitech as their first confirmed driver for the 2027 FIA Formula Two season. This marks his fourth consecutive year in the category. Dürksen joins Hitech from Invicta Racing, bringing a record of eight victories and 16 podiums in Formula 2. Hitech’s Head of Race Engineering, Jan Sumann, described him as a “proven Formula 2 race winner” equipped to handle the championship’s new “evolution car.” Following his successful test at Portimão, Paraguayan President Santiago Peña held a call with Dürksen to offer congratulations. The President described the achievement as a “dream realized for millions of Paraguayans.” Dürksen remarked that his success sends a message to his people that they are capable of achieving great things despite coming from a small nation.
