Journalist deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Overview
In early September 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo media community reported the deaths of two journalists following illnesses. Gentil Bedi Kabusimbi, a sports journalist for Sauti ya Mwenga – Kamituga, passed away between August 31 and September 1, while Francine Musowa, a journalist in Butembo, died on August 30.
Later in the month, on September 17, 2026, Franck Kakule Kipuni, the editor-in-chief for the Tazama RDC press group, died in Beni, North Kivu, after a short illness. Kipuni was recognized for his work in field reporting and his role as a fact-checker for Congo Check. In response to his death, Tazama RDC announced a temporary suspension of its publications.
