Following a 1-0 defeat to Greece in the UEFA Nations League, Jürgen Klopp addressed the performance of the Greek national team, taking responsibility for tactical decisions and the lineup. The loss marked the first defeat for Klopp since taking over the German national team following the 2026 World Cup. In response to the match, former German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger criticized the current German squad, describing them as an “average team” that lacks elite players capable of making a decisive difference. This sentiment was echoed by Joshua Kimmich, who admitted the team is currently far from elite levels.

Lothar Matthäus disputed Schweinsteiger’s assessment, contending that the squad possesses sufficient talent through players competing at top clubs such as FC Bayern, Barcelona, and Arsenal. Matthäus suggested the core issue is a “mentality problem,” asserting that players must demonstrate more grit to become difficult to beat. Despite their differing views on squad quality, both experts expressed confidence in Klopp’s ability to lead the rebuilding process, with Matthäus specifically noting Klopp is the ideal person to instill the necessary mentality.

Adding to the scrutiny, Matthias Sammer called for structural reforms within German football. Sammer criticized a perceived lack of courage and advocated for improved youth development and individualized training to ensure long-term success.
