JWST observations of Carina Nebula Treasure Chest

Overview

In early August 2026, the James Webb Space Telescope released high-resolution imagery of the “Treasure Chest” cometary globule in the Carina Nebula, located approximately 7,500 light-years away. The structure, an isolated cloud of gas and dust with a dense head and long tail, contains a compact cluster of about 70 young stars. Notable among these is a rare O-type star with approximately 19 times the mass of the Sun.

Data from the telescope's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) allowed researchers to pierce through dense dust, revealing that many of these stars are surrounded by circumstellar disks—precursors to planetary systems. While the globule's sculpted shape is influenced by the nearby Eta Carinae system, updated analysis suggests the stellar cluster is roughly 1.3 million years old, significantly older than previous estimates of 100,000 years.

The observations highlight JWST’s ability to perform detailed infrared analysis of stellar nurseries, moving from visual overviews to revealing the hidden structures and developmental stages of newborn stars.
