Nigeria adopts Kaduna out‑of‑school mapping model

Entities: Maruf Olatunji Alausa · Governor Uba Sani · Kaduna State School Feeding Programme · Kaduna State Government · Uba Sani

Overview

In late July 2026 Kaduna State released a school‑age census identifying 187,719 out‑of‑school children and launched the Reaching Out‑of‑School Children (ROOSC) project to reintegrate roughly 100,000 pupils. Development partners pledged funding for school construction, teacher training, community mobilisation and child‑protection measures, while a state‑funded feeding programme began providing free meals in public boarding schools.

A week later, Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education announced that it will roll out the Kaduna household‑mapping approach across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Minister Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa said the new data‑driven system replaces broad estimates, reducing the national out‑of‑school figure from an estimated 585,000 to under 200,000 in the pilot, and will enable precise targeting of interventions, better resource allocation and improved monitoring of progress toward universal enrolment.
