Karnataka forest encounter investigation

Overview

On August 15, a shootout occurred in the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary’s Shagya range between Karnataka Forest Department personnel and suspected poachers, resulting in three deaths.

Following the incident, a fourth suspect, Mahimadas, released a video claiming that forest officials began firing suddenly, causing him to flee in fear. He requested police protection, expressing concern that officials intended to use him as a witness.

Subsequent autopsy reports from the Chikkallur reserved forest area have challenged the Forest Department’s claims that the shots were fired in self-defence. While officials maintained that the deceased ignored commands to surrender, forensic wound ballistics suggest that two of the men were shot from a range of “one and two feet.” The investigation has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
