Karnataka infrastructure and environmental protests
Overview
Protests have emerged in Karnataka regarding major government infrastructure and water projects. In Bengaluru, residents and activists formed human chains to oppose 13 proposed elevated corridors planned by Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (BSMILE). Demonstrators argued the 126km project would create a ‘concrete jungle’ and fail to resolve traffic congestion, instead calling for more investment in public transport and Metro projects.
Concurrently, demonstrators gathered at Freedom Park to protest the Bedti-Aghanashini river-linking project. Organized by the Bedti-Aghanashini Valley Conservation Committee, the protest demanded the project be scrapped to protect the Western Ghats and the Uttara Kannada district. Participants urged the government to prioritize local water conservation, forest regeneration, and lake restoration over large-scale river diversion schemes.
