Karnataka VAO recruitment examination fraud investigation
Overview
The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) initiated an investigation into potential irregularities regarding a Village Administrative Officer (VAO) recruitment examination. The probe was prompted by social media scrutiny of a candidate from Haveri district who achieved a high score of 151 marks, contrasting sharply with a previous score of 25 in a KSRP constable exam. While initial checks by the KEA Executive Director suggested identity and OMR sheets were in order, the Haveri Deputy Commissioner was tasked with reviewing CCTV footage to identify any lapses.
Following the inquiry, the candidate, identified as Shankar Bannur, was arrested for cheating. A CCTV investigation at the Shiggaon examination center revealed that Bannur used a mobile phone to scan question papers via the Google Lens app to find answers. He reportedly admitted to the illegal act during police interrogation and has been handed over to the Shiggaon police for further investigation.
