Kathmandu night bus service expansion and safety enforcement
Overview
Kathmandu Metropolitan City is moving to expand its night bus service following a successful pilot program. The expansion plan involves increasing the fleet from seven to 28 buses and adding six new routes across the Kathmandu Valley to connect commercial hubs, hospitals, and valley entry points.
To ensure the sustainability of the service, which currently faces daily operational losses, officials have proposed night-time premium fares and cost-sharing among eight municipalities. Proposed safety enhancements include CCTV cameras and GPS tracking.
In conjunction with increased transit activity, the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office is intensifying enforcement of safety regulations. To mitigate risks such as driver fatigue, authorities are prioritizing the requirement for two drivers on long-distance night vehicles, particularly ahead of the Dashain festival. Police also intend to conduct inspections regarding driver sobriety and vehicle conditions.
