Keio University student arrest for credit card theft

Karen Niizawa, a 22-year-old Keio University senior and former sports facility receptionist, was arrested on suspicion of theft and fraud. Authorities allege that in April 2026, Niizawa used a staff master key to access a customer’s locker at a facility in Shibuya to steal a credit card.

Niizawa reportedly used the stolen card to purchase cosmetics in Shinjuku. While the suspect claimed to have found the card in a changing room, investigators believe the master key was used to unlock the secured locker. Police are investigating additional offenses that may total approximately 1 million yen in damages.

Niizawa, a returnee from the United States, previously served as a manager for the university’s ski club. Following the arrest, reports indicated that her social media accounts and university club pages were made private or deleted. Legal experts noted that the arrest will likely result in the revocation of a job offer Niizawa had secured with a major financial institution for 2027.
