Ken Griffin donation to Carnegie Mellon University
Overview
Citadel CEO Ken Griffin has pledged $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), marking the largest individual donation in the history of U.S. higher education.
The gift is divided between the university’s Pittsburgh campus and a new expansion in Miami. Approximately $2 billion will fund a new 35-acre campus in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, which is expected to enroll roughly 3,500 students starting in 2028. The Miami curriculum will focus on societal challenges such as human health, national security, energy, climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing, with specific emphasis on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. To facilitate this, Griffin purchased the 30-acre Mana Wynwood complex for $1.1 billion in cash.
The remaining $1 billion will support the Pittsburgh campus, including $500 million for the School of Computer Science, which will be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science. Construction for the Miami site is scheduled to begin in 2027.
