Kenya is experiencing an escalating food security crisis driven by poor harvests, high production costs, and unpredictable weather patterns. To address an anticipated deficit in maize, the government announced plans to import 25 million 90-kilogram bags of the staple crop. Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe noted that while annual consumption ranges between 70 million and 75 million bags, domestic production is insufficient. The crisis has expanded beyond maize to include shortages of milk and eggs. In the dairy sector, seasonal production challenges have forced Kenya to rely on imports from Uganda, while rising poultry feed costs have driven up egg prices. Despite government interventions, such as subsidizing fertilizer and halving seed prices, farmers in key hubs like the North Rift region remain hesitant to replant due to previous losses from drought, crop diseases, and high operational costs for fuel and labor. Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui has described the current situation as “unsustainable,” emphasizing the need for increased support to achieve agricultural self-sufficiency. Recent developments show the government has further adjusted subsidies to combat instability, reducing the price of subsidized fertilizer from Sh2,500 to Sh2,000 per 50kg bag and cutting the cost of high-quality maize seeds by half, from Sh300 to Sh150 per kg. Amidst the milk shortage, the Kenya Dairy Board has issued warnings against traders adulterating milk with water or chemicals like hydrogen peroxide to increase volume, noting that violators face fines of up to Sh10,000 or imprisonment for up to 12 months. Domestic maize production has now hit a seven-year low. The Kenya Food Security Steering Group projects a shortfall of approximately 18.9 million 90-kilogramme bags, with a projected harvest of 27.1 million bags against an annual requirement of roughly 46 million bags.
