Kenya maritime and defense diplomacy efforts

Overview

Kenya is expanding its strategic role in regional maritime security and international defense diplomacy. In late September 2026, an EU-funded mission launched in Nairobi and Mombasa to develop a regional policy framework for port security and navigation safety, targeting nine beneficiary countries across Eastern and Southern Africa. During this period, the Kenya Defence Forces also engaged with United Nations officials in New York to discuss peace support operations and the Women, Peace and Security Chiefs of Defence Network.

By October 2026, Kenya’s security cooperation extended to high-level forums such as the inaugural African Maritime Security Forum in Ghana, where the Kenya Navy participated in discussions on maritime governance and combating piracy. Additionally, Kenya’s National Defence University collaborated with the Netherlands Defence Academy on a symposium in Amsterdam to address the security implications of climate change, specifically regarding resource competition and military resilience.
