Kenya Standard Gauge Railway development
Overview
Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has seen significant growth in both passenger and freight operations. During the first half of 2026, passenger volume reached approximately 1.31 million, representing a 10.3 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025, despite a fare hike implemented in early 2024. Freight volumes also rose to approximately 4.1 million tonnes, up from 3.56 million tonnes in the previous year.
Building on this performance, President William Ruto announced plans to extend the SGR from Voi to the Tanzanian border. The project, estimated at 5 billion Kenyan shillings, aims to stimulate economic development in the border region. This extension is part of a larger regional effort to integrate East African transport infrastructure, including Kenyan extensions toward the Ugandan border and Tanzanian expansions intended to connect with Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
