Kerala State Waqf Board reconstitution
Overview
The Kerala government has reconstituted the State Waqf Board, replacing the committee previously led by K. S. Hamsa with a new nine-member body. M. C. Mayin Haji, a leader of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), has been appointed as the new chairman.
The dissolution of the former board, which was appointed by the previous LDF government and had over four years remaining in its term, has triggered political and legal friction. The Kanthapuram A. P. Aboobacker Musliyar faction of the Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama criticized the decision, alleging that the Sunni community was denied due representation while reformist groups, such as Jamaat-e-Islami, were granted seats.
While the Kerala High Court refused to stay the government’s reconstitution order, Justice S. Manu noted that the new appointments are subject to the outcome of pending writ petitions challenging the dissolution of the previous board. Additionally, two positions on the new board remain vacant as the government awaits further orders from the Supreme Court regarding the mandatory appointment of non-Muslim members.
