Following a period of political unrest and violence, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) have entered a period of tentative peace. After high-level discussions at the state secretariat, the KSU has agreed to temporarily suspend its agitation, though leaders noted the suspension is conditional upon the government fulfilling its promises. A major development involves the proposed Shree Cement project in East Jaintia Hills. Due to concerns regarding environmental impacts and the legitimacy of public hearings, the government has ordered a fact-finding committee, led by an independent official, to investigate. Construction on the project will remain at a “status quo” until the committee releases its findings. This committee will be led by a senior official independent of the district administration, and the investigation will include the local Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police. The agreement also addresses KSU demands regarding the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), the Migrant Workers Act 2020, and recruitment reforms at NEIGRIHMS. The government has committed to strengthening migrant worker verification processes processes, specifically planning to expedite the registration of non-state individuals through a new technology-based application to create a centralized database. Legal proceedings continue as the Meghalaya High Court has demanded a status report and case diary concerning the August 19 violence, which included attacks on court officers and damage to High Court vehicles. In a related environmental update, the Chief Minister reported that 72 illegal coke plants have been demolished since 2023 to ensure compliance.
