King County Metro service expansion

Overview

King County Metro announced a major expansion of bus services in South King County, scheduled to begin on August 29, 2026. The expansion includes nine new routes, over 3,000 additional weekly trips, and enhanced connections to Sound Transit Link light-rail stations. County Executive Girmay Zahilay described the plan as “the single largest bus service investment in South King County in a generation.”

As part of the South Link Connections project, Metro is also launching the Metro Flex pilot program in Auburn and Federal Way starting August 31. This on-demand service utilizes Metro-operated minivans to connect residential neighborhoods with transit hubs and employment centers. The two-year pilot allows riders to book trips via phone or a dedicated app, with fares set at $3 to match standard bus rates. Reduced fares are available for seniors, low-income customers, and individuals with disabilities, while riders aged 18 and younger ride for free.
