King Mswati III International Airport development
Overview
The Eswatini Civil Aviation Authority (ESWACAA) has introduced an Inclusive Business Development Strategy Framework to transform King Mswati III International Airport into a regional economic hub. The strategy targets E12 billion in investment and aims to create 20,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2037 through the creation of an ‘Airport City’ and a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
As part of this initiative, ESWACAA is inviting investors to participate in the proposed SEZ, which seeks to shift the airport from a passenger-focused facility to a commercial and industrial center. Targeted sectors for investment include agro-processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, cargo logistics, renewable energy, and waste management. The development intends to leverage aviation infrastructure to support industries requiring efficient logistics, such as cold storage and freight-forwarding, while aiming for non-aeronautical income to constitute 65 percent of total revenue.
