Klaros Ancient City archaeological excavations

Overview

Archaeological excavations at the Klaros Ancient City in the Menderes district of Izmir, led by Associate Professor Onur Zunal, have identified the site as one of the ancient world’s three major oracle centers. Operating from the 13th century BCE to the 4th century CE, the site served as a prophetic hub for leaders from Europe and Africa to consult the oracle of Apollo.

Findings include the massive Temple of Apollo, which required 450 years to construct, and evidence of the site’s transition into a settlement for blacksmithing and brick production following the spread of Christianity. Recent activities at the site have expanded to include cultural gatherings for poets and writers at the Temple of Apollo, where a 2nd-century BC statue of Homer was discovered. This statue provides scientific evidence suggesting the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey lived in the ancient Smyrna region.
