KMT and TPP cooperation breakdown in Zhu Bei

Overview

The planned strategic cooperation between the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) for the Zhu Bei mayoral election has collapsed. Following the breakdown, KMT candidate Wu Hsu-chih and TPP candidate Chiu Chen-yuan have both moved forward with their respective candidacies. Disputes regarding the timing and cause of the split have emerged. TPP supporters claim the breakdown occurred as early as May 8 when the KMT proceeded with internal primaries despite prior indications of yielding the seat. TPP Chairman Huang Kuo-chang criticized the KMT for failing to honor agreements, while Ko Wen-je denied involvement in the specific negotiations. Conversely, Wu Hsu-chih stated that the KMT central committee never requested his withdrawal.

The rift has escalated into legal disputes. Wu Tzu-chia, chairman of Formosa Monthly, filed criminal complaints against nine individuals, including TPP Chairman Ko Wen-je and Huang Kuo-chang, alleging they lied about previous agreements regarding candidate concessions.

In response, the TPP passed four resolutions stating that Hsinchu County elections are no longer bound by previous cooperation agreements. The TPP has threatened to expel members who support KMT candidate Hsu Hsin-ying, focusing instead on its own Zhubei mayoral candidate, Chiu Chen-yuan. The KMT has countered by prohibiting its members from campaigning for non-KMT candidates in areas where they have nominated candidates. While the KMT maintains that cooperation in Hsinchu remains unaffected by these legal disputes, the TPP expressed frustration over the lack of written evidence regarding prior negotiations and the KMT’s use of party discipline.
