Kolkata road infrastructure and safety updates
Overview
Kolkata has undergone various changes to its road infrastructure and visual aesthetics. Initially, the Eastern Metropolitan (EM) Bypass transitioned to a yellow, black, and white color scheme for dividers and barricades to improve visibility and safety. This coincided with government efforts to enforce stricter cleanliness and parking regulations.
Subsequently, a beautification drive involving colorful, rainbow-style paint on flyovers and roads—such as the Gariahat and Chingrighata flyovers—was implemented for the Durga Puja festival. However, following reports of motorcyclists skidding on these surfaces, authorities began removing the paint. While Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul defended the paint as being ‘anti-skid in nature’, officials have since installed yellow reflectors, known as ‘cats eyes’, to enhance safety at certain locations.
