While coal production peaked in 2016 and thermal electricity production reached a 24-year high in 2020, recent data from 2025 indicates that both electricity consumption and imports have reached record levels. To address these trends and reduce the necessity for energy imports, Kosovo has established the Corporation for Energy Storage (KRE Sh. A.). This public enterprise will manage a 125-megawatt battery storage system in Istog. The project is supported by a $236.7 million Compact Program, which includes a $202 million grant from the United States via the Millennium Challenge Corporation and a $34.7 million contribution from the Government of Kosovo.
