Kugbo Furniture Market fire in Abuja

Overview

A fire at the Kugbo Furniture Market along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway destroyed 21 shops and one vehicle on October 2, 2026. Eyewitnesses suggested the blaze may have been triggered by an electrical spark following the restoration of electricity by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) coordinated with the Federal Fire Service to contain the fire. While the incident resulted in extensive property damage to furniture, equipment, and merchandise worth millions of naira, no loss of life was reported.

In the aftermath, Senator Ireti Kingibe of the Federal Capital Territory called for the “modernization of the national fire and rescue framework” and stricter enforcement of fire safety regulations to protect traders in high-risk commercial zones.
