As recovery efforts continue following the July 28, 2026, earthquake, the scale of damage has risen to over 53,800 buildings. While water outages have been restored, many residents remain in evacuation centers or makeshift ‘at-home evacuations.’ Educational support is expanding nationwide. Eight prefectures, including Akita, Aichi, and Kochi, plan to establish school support teams this fiscal year to dispatch teaching staff to disaster-stricken schools. Additionally, Osaka Prefecture has announced measures to assist displaced students by facilitating enrollment or transfers into its public schools and providing exemptions for entrance and admission fees. Private sector assistance has intensified. Daiwa House Industry Co., Ltd. has launched a housing reconstruction consultation service, including a planned center in Uki City opening November 1, 2026. MOTTERU Co., Ltd. has issued donations to 12 child welfare facilities in Kumamoto. The NOK Group has also announced a total donation of 25 million yen to Kumamoto Prefecture, split between NOK Corporation (10 million yen), Eagle Industry Co., Ltd. (10 million yen), and Mectec Co., Ltd. (5 million yen). Furthering these efforts, Osaka-based Couria donated 50 million yen to Kumamoto Prefecture, representing total sales from a special collaboration featuring the character Kumamon on ‘Bonbon Drop Seals.’ Support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is also expanding. The Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation has opened applications for a subsidy program to help local governments develop temporary facilities. In Mashiki Town, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced a Small-scale Business Continuity Subsidy. To account for the ongoing impact on local businesses and residents, Kumamoto Prefecture has extended the implementation period for the ‘Kumamoto-style support subsidy’ from November 30, 2026, to January 31, 2027. Other private donations include a 10 million yen contribution from Nippun to the Japanese Red Cross Society. Actress Yu Tano has also donated 3 million yen and various supplies.
