On 28 July 2026, Kumamoto Prefecture Governor Kei Kimura travelled to Taichung, Taiwan, to discuss deeper semiconductor and economic cooperation. While the meeting was concluding, a magnitude‑7 earthquake struck Kumamoto. Kimura’s return flight was diverted to Fukuoka after Kumamoto Airport closed, and both officials expressed sympathy and reaffirmed the Taiwan‑Japan friendship. By 31 July 2026, Prime Minister Sae Takachi announced a visit to the quake‑hit area on 3 August to assess damage and speed recovery. The government pledged a 61.6 billion‑yen tax allocation and additional budget support, ~~while officials highlighted~~ noting the compounded risk of a summer heat wave. Plans were outlined for temporary emergency housing in Uto City and Hikawa Town, and a donation booth at a local festival was set up to raise relief funds. Later on 31 July it was clarified that the booth was located at the Shimonoseki “Monozukuri Kids Fest 2026.” Officials also said they would improve shelter conditions, water supply and medical assistance for evacuees staying in cars or homes, reinforcing the response to the “double disaster” of quake and heat.
