Kumamoto earthquake relief operations

In the aftermath of the late‑July 2026 earthquake that struck Kumamoto (reported as magnitude 6.5–7), Japanese authorities and private firms mobilised relief measures across the country.

The Ministry of Defense organised an emergency airlift of roughly 300 portable air‑conditioners from Iruma Air Base to Kumamoto shelters, with the Ground Self‑Defense Force distributing the units. Social‑media users highlighted retailer BIC Camera’s role in procuring and loading the equipment, noting the improvement in shelter conditions during hot weather.

At the same time, major convenience‑store chains – Seven‑Eleven, FamilyMart and Lawson – installed donation boxes at selected outlets from 29 July, allowing cash and mileage‑point contributions. Seven‑Eleven rolled the boxes out nationwide (with a few exceptions), while FamilyMart and Lawson set collection deadlines of 25 August and 31 August respectively. Local authorities in Fukuoka Prefecture, and the cities of Fukuoka and Kurume, also placed boxes in government offices and welfare centres, with collection periods extending to March 2027 and October 31.

All funds gathered are earmarked for delivery to the municipalities affected by the Kumamoto quake, complementing the direct material assistance provided by the Self‑Defense Forces.
