Kumamoto earthquakes July 2026

On July 29, 2026 a shallow magnitude‑3.2 quake struck Japan’s Kumamoto region, prompting the closure of the Kyushu Expressway between Ebino and Kumamoto Airport interchanges and the suspension of several highway‑bus services linking Miyazaki, Fukuoka and Kumamoto. The tremor was felt at low intensity in neighboring Miyazaki Prefecture, and no tsunami risk was identified.

The following day, July 30, a stronger magnitude‑3.8 quake occurred in the same area at a shallow depth of about 10 km. Maximum observed intensity reached shindo 2 in Kumamoto’s western and southern districts, with surrounding areas recording intensity 1. Authorities again issued no tsunami warning but advised the public to remain alert for potential aftershocks. No further transport disruptions were reported in the second event.
