La Escocesa factory rehabilitation in Barcelona
Overview
The Barcelona City Council has announced a project to rehabilitate La Escocesa, a former industrial factory in the Poblenou district, transforming it into a multi-use innovation hub. The initiative involves a total investment of 51.8 million euros, with the municipal government contributing 27.2 million euros. The remaining 24.6 million euros will be provided by participating entities, including the Generalitat de Catalunya and Mercabarna.
The facility, spanning approximately 11,500 square meters, is intended to integrate housing, culture, agri-food technology, and social economy projects. Mayor Jaume Collboni noted that the project aims to preserve the city’s heritage while transitioning from a traditional industrial model toward a diverse economy supporting emerging sectors. The site is expected to be operational by 2029 and is projected to generate roughly 100 direct and 500 indirect jobs.
