La Esperanza Solar project development in Mexico
Overview
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has reached a financial close for the La Esperanza Solar project in Campeche, Mexico. The project, located on the Yucatán Peninsula, consists of a 420 MWdc solar photovoltaic plant and a 150 MW battery energy storage system providing 750 MWh of capacity.
Financing for the project includes approximately US$510 million in debt from a consortium including BNP Paribas, JPMorgan Chase Bank, Natixis CIB, Santander, and Scotiabank, with equity provided by CIP’s Growth Markets Fund II and Mexican pension-fund manager Profuturo. The Mexican Ministry of Energy has designated the project as a priority.
Following the financial close, CFE Calificados, the commercial arm of Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), signed an electricity coverage contract to acquire clean energy from the facility. The agreement is intended to supply renewable energy to industrial sectors, including automotive, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical, while providing flexibility to the electrical system. Construction is currently underway with commercial operation targeted for 2028.
